My husband drives tractor-trailer pulling a coal bucket. Friday he was following another driver headed to their next pick up. Something suddenly caught my husband's eye. The tarp on the truck in front of him was beginning to bubble and buck. He reached for his CB mike to warn the other driver that something was wrong when the straps began to snap one by one. The more straps that broke the farther in the air the tarp stood until it looked like a giant black sail attached to the trailer.
A car was in the hammer lane passing my husband's truck when he saw the giant black sail. His eyes got wide and his expression said that he thought he was about to meet Jesus. He shook himself from his astonishment and floored the accelerator like the hounds of Hell were after him.
The final straps finally snapped and the tarp flew across the interstate like a prehistoric bird and disappeared down a 300 foot embankment. Needless to say nobody will be trying to salvage that tarp.
Other than embarrassing the heck out of the driver and causing endless teasing about coming up with a new hybrid big truck, there were luckily were no casualties other than the tarp.
So if you happen along the interstate and see something that looks like a mutant condor fly by...it could just be your neighborhood coal hauler.
