RPS, Steve Carlson/author's choice, "When I hear music, I just can't make my feet behave"

The first time Steve Carlson goes on tour with the Kane, Chris drags him along when he stops to visit his folks on the way from Tulsa to Dallas. The Kanes treat Steve like he’s a member of the family and he’s quickly as comfortable with them as he is with Chris.

Several times during the day he catches Mama Kane watching him with an expression of amused tolerance. He asks Chris if he’s doing something wrong.

“Naw, man. You don’t wanna try and figger out Mama. It’ll just give ya a headache.” Chris drawls as they head towards the back yard. “If it’s somethin’ she really don’t like, she’ll let ya know.”

Steve drags Chris to the kitchen with him to offer to help with dinner. She smiles at them indulgently and shoos them out of her kitchen, while telling Christian how wonderful it is that he finally found a nice boy, which has both men blushing hotly as they escape the house and his overly perceptive mama.

Before they leave the next morning, Steve catches Mama Kane away from the others.

“Mrs. Kane?” He asks politely.

She gives him that indulgent smile again and admonishes gently, “I told you to call me mama like Christian.”

“Uh—okay—umm—Can I ask you a question?” He dips his head shyly.

“Of course, honey. What is it?”

“You keep giving me these looks—am I doing something you don’t like or that I shouldn’t?” His voice is tentative.

“Ah honey, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.” She pats him on the arm soothingly. “It’s just in some ways you remind me of my Christian. It’s nice to see him with someone he can relate to so well.”

Steve looked at her baffled. He would never have said that he and Christian Kane were anything alike, apart from their love of music and performing.

“I don’t think I understand.”

“Of course you don’t, and all your friends are so used to it that they don’t pay attention to it anymore.”

Steve shook his head negatively still not understanding what she was saying. There was a whisper of movement behind him and he caught a whiff of the scent that meant ‘Chris’ to him. Chris bent over his shoulder and in a stage whisper said,

“It’s your feet, man. You’re always moving your feet or tapping your toes anytime you sit down or stand in one spot for any amount of time.” He gave an ornery little chuckle.

Steve looked at them exasperated. “I only do that when I hear music. I just can’t make them behave.”

Chris and his mother exchange a look.

“What?!” Steve can’t decide if he’s embarrassed or aggravated with the pair.

“Steve, sweetie, there hasn’t been any music playing these last couple days.” Mama Kane smiles at him like he’s just gotten his first gold star.

“Come on Carlson, we need to hit the road.” Chris slaps him on the shoulder then heads for the front door, laughing like he’s lost his mind.

“Told you you were like my Christian.” She smiles sweetly at his befuddled expression. “He does the same thing. You two always hear music…so your feet aren’t ever gonna behave.”

She grabs his arm and tugs him after Chris.

“You’d better come along before that boy gets impatient and leaves you.”

“But—I—but—“ He sputters as he lets her drag him toward their rental car.

The laugh that trails behind her is the same as her son’s, and Steve gives in, knowing he can’t win against both Kanes.

She hugs him and kisses his cheek admonishing him to take care of her boy before she moves on to Chris. He stands and stares after her wondering how these two people have the ability to continually surprise and flabbergast him.
