Summary: Prompt – One word - quiet
People thought their lives were all about sound stages, bright lights, guitars, Jack, Bud, screaming fans, and in your face attitude…and most days…yeah…
It had been the close to dawn when their coach stopped in front of the house. Still muzzy headed from sleep and alcohol they’d stumbled to bed.
He, Jason and Will were working on breaking down their various instrumentals for the studio session. Chris leaned against his back studying his script for MinuteMan humming along adding a comment here and there.
The guitars had been put away in favor of Sunday afternoon football games. He’d just gotten off the phone with his mom when he felt the weight against him get heavier. The exhausted bordering on sick Chris had stopped fighting and dropped off to sleep.
They rolled out of bed at the crack of noon, met mom and dad for an extremely late breakfast at Loveless’, and spent the rest of the afternoon in awe of the ball energy that was his mother and a rested Chris loose in Nashville.
Their studio time flew by as the music flowed like magic. The ride back to the house was noisy, raucous, and full of laughter.
Will flipped on the DVR for the Eagles vs. Skins while Chris brought a round of beers from the kitchen.
At halftime, he turned to make a comment to Chris only to find him missing. Not finding him in the house, he started to worry until he looked out the door and saw the shadowed form on the porch swing. Stepping outside, he made sure the door closed to dampen the sounds of revelry from the living room.
“Chris?”
“Hey, Eagles gittin’ their asses’ handed to ‘em?” Chris teased.
He settled on the swing and pulled his wayward partner against his chest.
“Skins are actually trying to make a game of it. Just missed your smart mouth.” He teased back.
A snort of disbelief was his answer as he felt Chris relax into his embrace. A slight push sent the swing into a gentle rocking motion.
These were the times he relished most. The quiet neighborhood allowed the sounds of the autumn night to smooth out the residual energy left from the day. He rested his face against Chris’ hair.
“You okay?”
The dark head tilted back until he could steal a kiss.
“Yeah. Everythin’s been so loud and busy the past week…just ya know? It’s great your folks are here, man.”
Knowing all Kane’s avoidance techniques intimately, he tightened his hold.
“Chris…?” His tone was stern.
Chris tensed slightly then relaxed. “This has just been so fuckin’ perfect. I keep waitin’ for the other shoe to drop.”
“I don’t think there’s one to drop. In this time and this place—I think we finally got it right.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
Another gentle push sent the swing in motion once again as they finally learned to listen to the quiet.
