Summary: Fic Friday #18 I came around the corner…
I came around the corner and stopped…
The weekend was winding down. The accommodations had been luxurious. The staff had been unfailingly polite and the service had been top-notch and unobtrusive.
The food had been plentiful, and mouth watering. There would definitely be dieting when I got home. Home. Wow. Real life seemed as far away from this place as Nevada was from the Moon.
I had been pampered, catered to, serenaded, and had fallen even more in love than I had been when I came to this place.
Tomorrow we would be leaving this fairy tale, but tonight everyone was winding down, relaxing on the comfortable overstuffed furniture, talking quietly, exchanging information, building new friendships, cementing old ones as we came face to face for the first time.
Rolling to my feet, I headed to the bathroom then made a detour to freshen my drink. Feeling restless, I made a circuit of the room providing refills and soaking up the atmosphere.
Roaming from room to room I allowed my senses to embed the fullness of my time here into the pictures in my mind’s eye. Remembering a private balcony off one of the nearby rooms, I turned wanting one more chance to soak the essence of the desert night into my frame.
I came around the corner and stopped at the sound of quiet voices coming from the room. I felt thankful for my dark clothing as no one noticed when I moved back into the deeper shadows of the hallway.
The polite part of my mind urged me to back away and find another route to my destination. The selfish part refused to move wanting just one last little piece of the weekend that was mine alone—something not shared with the others. So I stayed and watched the two men who had been so gracious, open, and unfailing good natured with all of our poking, prodding and asking questions they’ve probably answered countless times before.
Steve lay sprawled on the couch, his body language relaxed and open, his smiled indulgent as Christian threw himself down beside him. Christian’s grin was mischievous as blue eyes glanced around the room making sure they were alone. Perhaps he sensed my presence because he placed his hand over his mouth to keep his voice from carrying beyond Steve’s hearing.
I had no need to hear the words as Steve’s expression softened, and the hand that had rested over his heart reached out to caress Christian’s cheek.
I turned away, my restlessness settled, my spirit lightened. I thought I knew love, but now I truly did.
